Is it possible to setup Time Machine to use a networked drive?

I have an Airport Extreme (not the time capsule one) and I was told that I could hang a network drive off the airport through the USB port.....but when I tried it, it does not seem to like it.

Any ideas or suggestions? I need to get more capacity added but am hoping to avoid a huge expense....

I had a NAS off my router that did my backups - I created a sparsebundle (the image Time Machine makes to back up to) and set it on the drive and pointed TM in the right direction. The drive show up at all or just not in TM?

Don't be so impatient. You barely gave us any information at all: "it doesn't like it" is not exactly much to go on.

As deus says, does the drive show up in Finder?

I recently moved my TM eHDD from a direct USB-MBP connection to the USB port on a new Airport Express. It was recognized right away and started working for TM backups. So, it should work for you.
