Apple iOS App Store blamed for too many apps as Sony NGP is called "dead on arrival"
AppleInsider | Apple iOS App Store blamed for too many apps as Sony NGP is called "dead on arrival"
Speaking at the Game Developers Conference held in San Francisco this week, Trip Hawkins railed at Apple's App Store for having too many titles, while blaming Nintendo for inventing the concept of licensed games as Ngmoco proclaimed Sony's Next Generation Playstation "dead on arrival" due to the App Store's success.

This is a simple case of saying my product will fail cause your one is too successful. And totally forgetting the flaws in your own product.

Too many...
DOA? I don't believe that. I know I'm getting one, that's for sure.

I read this last night. I don't know about completely DOA but WOA (Wounded On Arrival :p) is most likely. Apple's ecosystem is practically incomparable.

I do wish Apple would start inching bar a little higher on quality in the App Store - especially for the Mac App Store. I don't want that to get overrun with junk apps like the IOS App Store is - and I'm already seeing junk apps showing up there. I know Apple is enjoying the fruits of having a very large net in the water but - where I used to regularly peruse the App Store and look at the latest releases - I no longer do that. There's too much crap.

Fortunately - Genius helps - but still. Let's keep the standard high for the Mac App Store please. Just my $0.002

I don't disagree but that is why I really only look at the most popular titles for iOS anymore. The Mac Apps store will be nice since it will be THE single stop shop for Mac software. It's always been challenging to buy Mac software and even the Apple retail stores don't stock but a fraction of what is actually available out there. Places like Version Tracker and Mac Update have TONS of Mac Software of all kinds but the Mac Apps store seems like it will be a home to much more than they even have now. In the end, crap Apps will sink and the cream will rise to the surface.

It's definitely making it convenient for me to spend $$! :)

Yes - That's an excellent point that I probably don't have the same appreciation for simply because I'm relatively new to Mac - but fortunately seem to have arrived at a good time - although maybe a couple of years earlier would have been even better. :D

I might also add that this software issue is pervasive in the Windows world. Ever gone to a Computer or electronics stores (Best Buy comes to mind here) and tried to buy say a CD/DVD burning program or even AV software for Windows? 58 different programs that all claim to do the same thing and all claim to do it the BEST. Which one is crap? Who the heck knows. It's all about research. Even with the MAS I don't see things getting that bad, possibly ever. There are multiple apps out there that do the same thing, but not many, and the better ones always survive while the crap falls away.

One thing I can say about the Mac world, we all know what the good software is and we all recommend it. In a relatively small community like this it's easy to find good software and Mac developers are pretty much aware of the fact that crap will be rejected outright so you had better write a good App from day one.

That's why I like the App stores. I don't believe every Apple user can spot the good from the bad apps a mile away. A lot of switchers and new users don't have a clue. But that's where the App store comes in. You can read the feedback on the apps. And use that to pick a good App.

Unlike in a store, general PC stores are bad for this. You ask then what's the best software for the job you have. And they won't tell you the best. They will just push the one to you that they need to sell fast. Everyone knows dead stock in a business is a very bad thing. So you just get shovelled with whatever they need to get rid of. Did you buy a good piece of software? You don't know till you try it.

So that's why I like the App store. Yes sometimes the dodgy software makes it to the top like Angry Birds. And sometimes there is a real gem hidden away that has not gotten a lot of exposure. But they are rare and most times you can read the comments and instantly know if that piece of software is worth getting or not. It's unbiased feedback.

And Apple's 30% model works in favour for this. That means be it a big or a small developer, to get the sales you need a quality App. There's no salesman pushing one software ahead of another just cause they get more profit from it (like what happens in general PC stores).

And I'm ok with the App store being for the time being quantity over quality. Cause as everyone has said, and I agree, most times the really good Apps will shine and get more downloads. A model where the best made software is rewarded and not just advertising or retail incentives is in my opinion the best system.

Definitely the best part about the App Store. Other people who have used the product's review. I think this is the way of the future and the only exceptions will be expensive programs (Adobe Suite etc).

Having not tried the Mac version of Angry Birds, what's wrong with it?

Nothing. It's the same as the iOS version. Minus the touch. I just really don't like the game.
There is no documentation or in game button to play the game in windowed mode though. I even emailed the developer about this. And the response I got was "press "Command+F" (I think it was). That's it. Not a word about why it's essentially a hidden feature. It should not be hidden. And I thought the email response was very abrupt. Not a good way to get me to purchase any more of their software. And yes I did purchase Angry Birds for OS X.

I love it when one individual or company cries because another out-competed them. It's business, not socialism.

I don't think it's necessarily much a hidden feature. A lot of games and video players' shortcut for full screen mode is "Command F".

You and millions of others. Even our Prime Minister was busted playing Angry Birds instead of doing her job of running the country.
