Hi All

I'm a Windows developer and only just beginning to experiment with Mac OS X. I have a brand new 27" iMac i5 with 12gb ram. Over the past few days I've have regular crashes (few times a day), where the screen greys out and I'm told to restart.

I need to know if anyone out there can shed some light on this error report for me. I *think* its telling me there is a problem with AirPort, but I'm also not sure if the references to Parallels is important.

Any experts out there?

How are you determining that it may be a problem with Airport or Parallels? The kernel panic(s) you're experiencing (at least this one) is related to a kernel task...

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task

Kernel panics in a Mac are somewhat equivalent to the infamous BSOD we all learned to "love" about Windows. Kernel Panics are usually related to a hardware problem and sometimes software. I would start by looking closely at the extra memory you have in your iMac. Is it after market memory?

If it is, pull the modules from the bottom slots and go back to the original 2 x 2 GB modules in the top slots and see if that cures it. It may be just a matter of reseating the modules. I know from my own experience with adding memory to my Mid 2011 iMac that it takes considerable downward force to seat the modules properly.

The line in the stack trace that lead me to AirPort:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.apple.driver.AirPort.Atheros40(500.55.5)[39470173-FCB6-3D66-BC3B-2C4F9BE79A2C]@0xffffff7f80e6c000->0xffffff7f80fabfff

Also, as a test I've been running the machine using ethernet and with AirPort turned off. No crashes. It did appear that the crashes were when the wireless network was being used heavily by iTunes running on Mac OS X.

Completely wrong path?

No, not necessarily. However, I find it very unusual for a brand new iMac to crash (kernel panic) because of an airport card. An older iMac, maybe yes. However, I've been in this business long enough to know that it's folly to rule anything out.

I would say keep testing it with airport turned off and plugged into ethernet. Let's see what happens after a few days. In any event, the machine is under warranty and if it does turn out to be a defective airport card, Apple will replace it.

I can verify this issue, with many, many repeating instances with the same Airport crash log details.

I'm the Mac technician at a college in the UK and we took delivery of 37 new 24" i5 iMacs over summer, all running Lion. Every single one of them has been crashing every 5 minutes for the last week or so when Airport is turned on, (seemingly since I ran the 10.7.2 update on them, but I can't confirm that this is totally accurate). Some are them are even crashing during the .kext load at startup and not making it as far as the login screen.

I've tried replacing the IO80211Family.kext file with the one from Snow Leopard (after hearing of success with this method in another forum where the same issue has been reported), but to no avail. We're now stuck without any wireless connection in the Games Design classroom. The only workaround I can find is to boot into safe mode and delete the wi-fi network option from the Network Settings pane, then restart.

After 7 years in this job and 15 years using Macs, I've never had so many problems with any OS in my life as I've had with Lion....

similar issue on my new imac 27" running Lion

Got a new iMac a month ago.

15 sec into conversations on facetime using wifi, kernel panic occurs.

Instructed by phone support to erase and reinstall HD. No help.

Brought to Apple store to test. Could reproduce the problem in the store environment.

Brought home a brand new replacement. Same problem occured again using home wifi... router provided by Verizon services.

Is there a specific conflict to some type of wifi router?

First time converter into Mac. confidence significantly lowered.

Same issue, same backtrace

I'm having exactly the same issue as "mac new comer" (in fact, I'm also relatively new to my iMac and iPhone). FaceTime triggers the kernel panic, and does so predictably.

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.apple.driver.AirPort.Atheros40(501.58.1)[13BE9AFD-5158-3CD9-B5E9-AAF5BE3062B4]@0xffffff7f80e6d000->0xffffff7f80facfff

I've added 4G of memory to the box, but from what I'm seeing here and in other forums, this is apparently a software or firmware issue and probably not a memory issue.

Is there a specific conflict to some type of wifi router?

An issue with the 802.11 link should never cause a kernel panic, regardless of the router, access point, or the quality of the wi-fi signal. At worst, such problems should only cause the wi-fi link and possibly the interface to go down and be re-negotiated in an orderly way. A full-blown kernel panic, as this is, indicates a hardware problem, or maybe a fundamental software problem such as a badly written driver.

I talked with a senior tech support person at Apple about this problem. He was reasonably clueful, and we discovered that the crash is in the AirPort wi-fi driver, as expected. Connecting the box via an ethernet cable made it go away. He insisted that the cause of the crash was that FaceTime, being a bit of a bandwidth hog, was exceeding the capacity of the wi-fi connection to pass traffic, with unpredictable results. I insisted that a kernel panic was not an appropriate response to this condition, and that if the capacity of a connection is exceeded, the worst that should happen is that the network interface associated with the AirPort wi-fi system goes away and has to be re-negotiated. The behavior I'm seeing (and which others have seen) is consistent with an uncontrolled buffer overrun in the driver, or some such.

Anyway, the band-aid for this problem seems to be to use a hardwired ethernet connection rather than the iMac's internal wi-fi.

Downgrade to Snow Leopard and see if the problem goes away. This sounds totally unacceptable to me though. If the driver can't handle a buffer overload it isn't doing its job.

It's easier to just run an ethernet cable to the nearest hub. :)

SO What now, you buy a $2000.00 mac and when you have a problem with the wifi you should shut it down and use a cable instead?

This might not be an option for me since my router is far away and there is no way to run a cable, and why would I do that?

We need a solution to this problem asap.

This is Apple's fault by rushing out Lion untested, I have beed a MS user my entire life then switched to Ubuntu for 2 years and now finally Mac. LION SUCKS - there is nothing good in it or useful. It's all a bunch of stuff that nobody uses, at least for now until it will catch on. But the errors in it are astonishing.

We need to fix the problem, not make it go away by ignoring it.

Well my other desktop system is an Ubuntu Linux system. When something doesn't work there, I can file a formal bug report and get some kind of interchange going with the developers. Apple keeps all its users inside a golden cage.

We need a solution to this problem asap.

I totally agree with you. The Apple senior tech support fellow with whom I talked tried to tell me that FaceTime uses a lot of bandwidth, which it does, and may exceed the capacity of the wi-fi link, and that that was the reason for the crash. I tried to explain to him that a kernel panic is never an acceptable outcome, regardless of what buffer overruns or other stress conditions a driver might encounter. I explained to him that a properly written driver will fail gracefully if it's stressed beyond its limits - perhaps exiting and then reloading itself. A kernel panic is not a graceful failure mode. I don't know how far up the Apple ladder this insight will go. Proprietary software is a bummer in that the attention of the developers inside the Cathedral is also proprietary!

In my case, I just want the d**n network to work without crashing the system. If I have to hard-wire it, so be it. People need to p**s and moan to Apple until they get the AirPort driver, or its underlying dependencies, fixed so this doesn't happen, and I can take down the ugly cat5 wire that's strung across a corner of our living room! This iMac here is a desktop system, and the Wi-fi is a nice plus, but It's not a big deal to do what I do on all my other in-house computers, which is plug them into the LAN with cat5. Either that, or I can avoid using FaceTime altogether since here it's the only application that I've seen cause this crash.

I've been using Gentoo Linux and Ubuntu for years, and got an iMac because it's well suited for graphics work, and because it's very, very well integrated with VMware Fusion so I can run both Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux as VMs and they run smoothly with no problems. This, and the fact that the monitor is first rate and can be properly calibrated for photography work.

We need to fix the problem, not make it go away by ignoring it.

Well I'm not exactly sure what I can do, being a mere Apple customer. I could take the box back to the Apple store and demand a replacement - which would probably have the same problem. If by "We" you mean that you work for Apple and can get some serious feedback to the developers, then all I can say is "Thank you!" and "how can I help you".

Hello.

First of all, I'd like to let you know that my native language is not english, so please excuse my mistakes.

Rest easy! Your English is probably better than mine, and I'm an American ;)

I was searching for something like this thread. I bought a brand new iMac (mid 2011). For some reason, I was testing the Facetime App with the computer and my iPhone, and after 10 seconds, a kernel panic occurred. I was astonished. Then, I spent some time doing several things with the computer, and tried it again to check if there was any problem with that specific App or it was just a coincidence.

After around 10 secs, again, it crashed.

I don't really know what's wrong with my computer, software, router, or...!

My guess here - and it's just a guess since the kernel panic reports from Leopard apparently don't include an execution backtrace - is that the AirPort driver is crashing and panicking the kernel. The symptoms you describe are exactly the same as mine, using Lion, and the crash report in Lion suggests that the crash occurred while executing code within this driver.

Btw, I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a iMac Mid 2011 2.5Ghz Intel Core i5 with the stock 4Gb RAM (2x2Gb).

I've got the crash report, I will post it here. I hope it helps to find a reason/solution.

From the number of people I've found in Mac forums who are having exactly the same problem, or one very close to it, my guess is that this is Apple's problem and all we can do is wait until they fix it and push the fix to the rest of us. The workaround, as I noted, is to hard-wire your network with ethernet. In my experience here, using FaceTime over Wi-Fi is the only circumstance under which this problem occurs. FaceTime is a particularly big user of bandwidth, and my guess is that the kernel panic is caused by a buffer overrun or other condition caused by the fact that data is being queued for output faster than the output can handle it.

Thank you so much for your time and help

No problem. :)

kernel panic

I am having the same problems with my new iMac bought late last year. From time to time I suffer a kernel panic - text of latest report is below.
I have yet to speak to Apple but do not use Facetime - in fact I use no software which is bandwidth hungry, just email and normal surfing (no video streaming).
It would seem that there is a problem which only Apple can fix - I am loathe to return my iMac for a replacement only for the same problem to arise. I can use an ethernet cable but it is very inconvenient as it trails across the room and not what I paid my money for.
I hope Apple read these messages and take action.... In the mean time if anyone has any ideas let me know!

Yes, it looks like the same problem as above. The KP is occurring and being caused by Airport according the KP report you provided.

I personally think it's a mistake not to get Apple involved in this. Since your iMac is still under warranty, it's best to build a case with them. If you have to return your machine and get a new one, then that's what I would do.

Way... way too many specs to list.
Well my other desktop system is an Ubuntu Linux system. When something doesn't work there, I can file a formal bug report and get some kind of interchange going with the developers. Apple keeps all its users inside a golden cage.
.

You get somewhat better results by registering as a developer and opening a bug. Note, I said 'somewhat'. Just an FYI. At least then you'll generally be asked for some specifics.
