Been covered before I'm sure but at 75 it takes a while for things to sink in! My iMac is currently running OS X 10.7.5 (11G63b) Lion.
I am buying a new image processing software and it will only operate on 10.8.5 or later. Is it a simple task to update to Mavericks on the iMac?
Terrified something disastrous will happen! I took my Mac Book Pro to the Apple store and let them do it as it was still in warranty!

Since your iMac is currently running 10.7.5...please remind us what iMac model you have so we can be sure it can run 10.8 or 10.9.

Thanks guys. My Mac is iMac 21" 2.5 Ghz intel core i5. memory 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3

Yes...no problem running 10.8 or 10.9 on that computer.:)

The 10.9 upgrade is very easy. But as always...it's good to backup anything that you wouldn't want to lose. 99+% of the time the OS upgrades go fine.:)

Thanks guys. I'll backup and update tomorrow (wife wants her iTunes this evening)! She'll kill me if it goes wrong! Oh well, died several times already so once more won't hurt! :D

From one 75 year old to another.

Mavericks runs great. Just ensure your backup is current, and download from the App Store. Fast and rock steady.

Thanks harry - just running the backup now, I've already downloaded the app so I'll run it once the backup is complete.

Before you install, you may want to create an install media. Use an 8gb USB stick or SD card, it's great to have on hand for emergencies.

Creating a bootable OS X installer in OS X Mavericks
Thanks for that ferrarr. Our computer is split (don't know the technical term) between my wife and myself - we both have a log-in when it first starts. When I do a backup, does it backup the whole computer or just the part of the person logged in? I'd hate to lose all her stuff - I'd probably get killed!!;D

Upgrade completed without any problems - my word, a heck of a lot faster now!
I did not get any option to create the bootable installer at any time during the update. I downloaded the app last night, backed up the computer this morning and then ran the app. Can I create it now from somewhere?

Not without downloading it again. Once you run the installer, it deletes itself. However, having a bootable flash drive isn't really necessary if you use Carbon Copy Cloner to make your backups to an external hard drive. The CCC backup is bootable and also contains the recovery partition. In other words, it's a clone.
