I figured this would be a good thread to start for all of those ex-Windows users who have gotten vague messages from Windows that didn't really explain what the problem was. My favorite error message that I received was when I was ten and I was playing around with Paint Brush. The program closed and said, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." I was on Paint Brush. What kind of illegal operations can you do on Paint Brush? In Microsoft's defense, I think they've gotten rid of that error message in recent years. So, what's your favorite error message from Windows?

The blue screen of death of course. I got it twice last night while trying to install some game demos for my brother.

JTLYK, I actually did get that error when I plugged in a USB mouse. I had to use the orignal PS 2 mouse to say Allow.

That's hilarious. So Windows' idea of security is, "Spyware GOOD, USB mouse BAD."

Remember, that Vista message is not an Error, it's Vista watching out for you!

I just feel they are going a bit too far. A mouse for heavens sake?

OK, not Windows, but in Outlook "The operation failed." upon startup - that's it, no further explanation. No idea what operation failed or why it failed - just that it failed. Go Microsoft!

Don't really have a favorite error message... But I got a couple funny ones..

This program has performed an illegal operation. The cops are on the way.

Windows has found a virus in the system folder. To prevent further damage, Windows has deleted the system folder.

My favorite isn't an error message, but rather a change in error messages Microsoft announced for Vista. They said that they would try and make them clearer to understand. Sounds good, right?

My question is instead of trying to make error messages easier to understand, why don't they get RID of what causes the error message in the first place?!?!?! :bomb:

You know, Window is actually entertaining to watch from afar on my Mac ;)

My favorite - though not an actual Windows error - took this call at least twice a day when I was doing phone tech support for Win 98 & 98SE.

Customer: My internet is not working
Me: do you get any type of error message
Customer: yes
Me: Ok, what is it?
Customer: waol caused an error in aol.exe
Me: And did you call AOL?
Customer: Yes, they said it's a Windows problem
