Hey all -

So a transformer in the neighborhood blew and caused a power outage in the house, and an unexpected power loss. Needless to say this happened when I was using the computer. Is there any diagnostic to run to see if any damage was caused? Should I be checking anything? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Does whatever you have, post does not say, boot and work okay? If so run Repair Permissions from within Disk utility.

Run Disk Utility on your drive and make sure nothing got corrupted. That's what will usually happen on a power failure.

Sorry, I have an mid 2011 iMac. I should of posted that info in my original post. It booted up fine, maybe a little longer then normal, but overall fine. Forgive me for my ignorance( I am very new to the mac world), but am I running that repair permissions on the hard drive?

Thanks,

Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Applications. Select your hard drive in the column on the left. Then run Verify Disk and Repair Permissions.

Advice: Get an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for your iMac and then you won't have to worry about it. They're inexpensive and can save you a lot of grief especially if you live in an area where there are power failures or brownouts.

That was the first thing I purchased when I got our new iMac last year.

FWIW I was replacing microwave ovens yearly until I put a decent one in the kitchen. Now every electronic gadget in the house is on a UPS. Cheaper than replacing gadgets.

When you talk about UPS, are you talking about the power strips(surge protectors) that you can plug multiple items into, then plug it into the wall?

This is a UPS (a small one)
Amazon.com: CyberPower CP425SLG Standby 425VA 255W Desktop UPS: Electronics

Those cheap surge strips IMO aren't a lot of protection

Thank you for the help, after work it is off to best buy i go to buy one. BTW, I ran the disk utility and this is what came up? Can you tell if there is anything I need to be worried about?
