I recently upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitain, but now the Apple mail app keeps flashing that it is "upgrading mail" and the only way out is to force quit the application----any ideas how to correct this----otherwise the Mac works fine----just have to use another mail service. Thanks for any advice.

Have you upgraded to X.11.1 as there are a number of Mail fixes in that update. Using POP or IMAP?

All of a sudden my "send" arrow is grayed out and I can't send an email out. What could have happened? Thanks.

Go into Mail's preferences and check out the account settings. Is the sending configuration correct (server, password, etc).

My mail preferences are OK - I'm just having trouble seeing the side bar. (*_*)
Not sure what that means. Can you explain a bit more?

P.S. ... and I'm having trouble sending email - the send arrow is dimmed out!

Do you have a proper address entered in the To: ______ and a Subject entered in the Subject: _____ and some text in the Message area…?

For your "sidebar" problem, check your View(menu) options, like maybe show/hide Mailbox list view…???

There are no show/hide options under view. I just opened Mail again and was clicking the icons when I enlarged it. Using the Escape button did not return it to normal size, and at the extended size, it shows no toolbar as well. I'm just going to access my mail accounts from Safari. It's too aggravating. Thanks again.

I'm sorry that didn't work, but I haven't bothered going to El Capitain yet and I mistakenly thought they might have kept the view setup to Mavericks or something earlier than El Capitain that worked. How silly of me to have made such a logical assumption!!!

It might help us to know what you clicked on to enlarge the window if you remember. In the meantime open Mail, go to the Window menu, and choose Zoom. That may shrink the window back to a point where you can adjust its size.

I keep upgrading my Apple Mac Book Pro. when Apple has a new OS,but they all just seem to be about the same in poor operation. Just seems the boot up gets longer and my programs run sloooooower.
Why does Windows10 seem faster and run my programs better?
Why can't Apple get it that people want to use their computers, not keep typing in security passwords?

For shanablema:

Click on Mailboxes (underneath the envelope icon at top left) this will show/hide the side bar.

Good luck!

Any chance a moderator can change the name of this thread, (El Capitain to El Capitan) or have I missed a joke somewhere?

Mail appear to have been a problem with El Capitan, I had to delete Mail accounts and re-enter then to be able to download emails. And have seen others having all sorts of mail issues on other forums.

El Capitan a DISASTER! Mail screwed & Microsoft Office for Mac critical update downloaded twice but won't install. I have only had it 2 days so who knows what else I might find!! I am not looking for answers at the moment as I am chatting to a Senior Apple Advisor but I have had enough wasted time. Going back to Mountain Lion as soon as I can find out how!! I originally upgraded because in 2 years + I have never had iCloud Drive on my machine. I now have that but at way too much cost in other problems. NOT GOOD!!
