There are people on these forums who are running Macs that are well over 15 years old just fine. It all depends on what you want to do with it. On average you will still be able to run the latest Mac software on machines for about 5 years before the OS itself passes the hardware by, but that doesn't mean that you can't still use the machine to suit your needs.

I upgrade, on average, every 4 to 6 years with few exceptions.

Also, what Macs some people find still useful after 10 years are hopelessly out of date for others.

For example, I'm using a 2005 iMac G5 as office machine with no problems, and have just bought a 2000 PowerBook Pismo for indoor use, but I've seen loads of threads telling people they need to buy newer machines to stay up to date.

The life of your machine really depends on how much you want to stay current, as well as how long it will physically last.

Cheers :)

How long is a piece of string!!!! :p

I honestly believe that the Mac’s that Apple have made are of superior quality than of the Windows machines you can buy. If you treat your machine right, it could last you a life time if you dont need to stay up to date.

how many years can i expect my mac to last?

"Lifespan" can mean a number of things:

- How long will it remain "current" (be able to do all the latest & greatest things in a spedy manner).
- How long will it physically last.
- How long will it be able to run the most current OS version.

Also...if we are talking how long will it physically last...again it depends. One person may use their computer 3 hours/week...someone else may use it 12 hours/day (84 hours/week). So it really depends.

Just use it!;) Whatever is going to happen is going to happen. We as individuals have little control over the computing world as a whole.
