Kernel Issues: Powermac G3

Hey guys.

so, i'm back working on the G3, and lately its been crashing on me twice a day.

Heres the specs:

1gb Ram
ATI rage 128
500gbHDD (if you saw my previous post on this, i managed to get the linking fixed, it was only a matter of drivers.)

anyway..
after the crashes i go check the console and i get the exact same thing, a bunch of kernel messages. i was clever enough to copy them after each crash, and they are completely identical.

does anyone mind telling me what this huge mess means?

the only thing i understand out of this is "ROM ndrv for ATY,Rage128y is too old (0xb3383430)"

i believe it might simply be a ram issue, but i'm not sure.
it mentions bluetooth, which comes from a usb hub i have, and its been crashing before i even had it do that cant be the issue.
not sure about the ethernet because i have it connected to the internet though internet sharing from my macbook.

I had a USB hub that was crashing my G4...got rid of it and my problem went away.

i've had it idling for about 4 hours, and it hasn't crahed.

noticed that every time it crahses im ether using itunes and msn/system prefs.

could be that comp can't handle itunes and something else.

It'd be a little weird that if the computer simply couldn't handle iTunes (Which it should be able to) it would just crash with a Kernel Panic. Try going into Activity Monitor while you're using iTunes and some other apps, and see how the Ram and CPU usage is acting. It really shouldn't exceed 75% with simple apps like that opened.

Also, see if it still crashes when you're disconnected from the Internet and the hub.

I'd say that about 80% to 90% of the time kernel panics are due to a hardware problem. In order of likelihood, that problem is usually:

- bad third party RAM
- a bad USB hub
- a peripheral that your Mac doesn't like for some reason (sometimes just a poorly attached cable, or a bad cable, is the problem)

If you have very recently added new software, especially something that alters the system at a low level, such as anti-virus software, or something that changes the look and/or function of the Mac interface, I would suspect that first. Uninstall that software, restart, and see if things get better. (This type of software typically requires an uninstaller to completely disable. Just dragging the application, or the application's folder, to the Trash won't disable it.)

If that isn't it, I would restart the Mac with the Shift key held down (invoking a Safe Boot, with all kernel extensions disabled) and see if the problem goes away. If it does, the Kernel Panics are probably due to a software problem. It it doesn't, the problem is most likely hardware related.

If you suspect a hardware problem, the next thing that I would do is to shut down your Mac, uninstall all peripherals other than the Apple-supplied keyboard and mouse, restart and see if that helps. If it does, you can re-attach one peripheral at a time, restarting each time, until you isolate the offending peripheral.

If that isn't a solution, I would remove all third-party RAM and see if that fixes things.

Right. Well right off the bat i'm on safe mode and a few things have gone wrong.

-Spotlight is completely useless and claims there isnt any results
-iTunes, most importantly music simply doesnt play. its stays at 0:00.
-Quicktime works fine, but No sound.
-Volume control tab dissappears when i click it.
- when i try to higher the volume i have a little symbol under the volume logo, i suppose its mute or something related to that.

Now, Testing for hardware will take me a long while, mainly because the G3 doesnt instanly crash, it can take up to hours or heck the entire day.

While you are in Safe Boot mode, all kernel extensions are disabled. So much of the functionality of OS X will be disabled. The point of booting into Safe Boot mode is to see if your Mac no longer has Kernel Panics. If it does, then the problem was likely software based.

Hey guys. so here's a little update.

i had the powermac running pretty much all day without anything pluged in, (usb bluetooth hub, keyboard, usb extenction for mouse) and i took out the original hockey puck mouse and keyboard.

the computer ran all day with the following programs:
iTunes, playing music
Mercury Messenger
Activity monitor
System profiler

it was untill right now, that i decided to close everything and go to bed.

i looked on activity monitor after closing everything, and whoops. 98% CPU usage eventhough nothing is running. i opened up console log and the last thing it said was "crash dump crashed" looking at acvitivty monitor it showed finder doing something, so i relaunched it and well. it did not launch back.

tried logging off but wouldnt let me.

No kernel panic, though i did have to obviously reboot.

how strange.

got you guys a screenie.
