Okay, so I spilled juice on my macbook pro keyboard, and only a few of the keys do not work. The computer functions fine, and all of the other keys, that were away from the spill work. I took it to apple and they recommended that I purchase a 350$ keyboard from them. I have found multiple keyboards for under 50$ and was curious as to why they were so cheap. I am looking to get the best product, for the lowest cost. Could someone tell me if this product works just as well as the 350$ they suggested at apple. Let me know ASAP

922-7183 Apple Macbook G4 Pro 15"

Thanks guys!

If $350 is too much...then give the $50 keyboard a try. Are these $50 dollar keyboards new or used?

What other options do you have?

You could get the original keyboard (seems so anyway) that is in your mac from iFixit for 99$.

That would seem to be a MUCH better deal. Not sure why Apple is charging $350 for a keyboard!

Maybe it covers the installation fee as well?
Anyway, pnasca, if you do choose to do it yourself iFixit has some excellent guides on how to do it.
Also I believe you have a PowerBook, not a MacBook Pro because the only Mac Laptops with G4 processors are PowerBooks. The MacBook Pro's all have Intel Processors.

@McYukon

I'm pretty sure pnasca has one of the old pre-unibody discrete MacBook Pros.

The old 15" & 17" Powerbook G4s and the
15" & 17" Early 2006 to Mid 2008 MacBook Pros had basically the same design.

Yeh, it's a bit hard to keep them apart.
Pnasca, make sure when buying a keyboard that it is made exactly for your model.
The 50$ keyboard you linked says MacBook Pro G4 which is a bit strange as there isn't a "MacBook Pro" that has a G4 processor.

What kind of juice?

Apple is charging $350 because it's a $99 part plus labour fee to install it correctly.

If you want to do it yourself that's fine, but keep in mind that its trickier than it looks, and also that if juice got into the computer, this new keyboard will only be a temporary fix. You WILL eventually get other problems, as sugars LOVE circuit boards and eat them slowly.

I've heard of high labor charges...but $250 bucks sounds like an awful lot. At $75 bucks/hour...that's 3+ hours labor to install a keyboard!

Hey...if that's what they're charging (it is what it is).

I'm guessing Apple is charging more than $99 for the part...and of course then adding labor charges to get to $350.

It's also possible (we don't know for sure)...maybe there was some additional labor charges to clean up the spill residue (who knows).

It was orange juice, and they were pretty positive it did not spill on anything but the keyboard, so I should be okay.

Then do the job yourself. Go to iFixit: The free repair manual, order a new keyboard from them and follow their step by step instructions for changing it out. That should save you the labor cost of $250.00.

Regards.
