I seem to remember being told that it is not possible to save from a Mac to a PC.

I have opened an .odt from a PC, edited it and saved the changes successfully.
Was the information I was given wrong, at least in part?

It depends on the file-type and the application. What's program is a .odt file?

Most common file-types can be saved back and forth without any issue.

Thanks. .odt is an Open Office document used by OO Writer.

Oh yeah, that's a no-brainer. OpenOffice is compatible across the board.

Things get a little trickier when you're talking about MS Office files.

Well if it's compatible with software on windows and your Mac, then you're good.

In fact, Alwyn, you were simply lied to in the first place.

Almost all COMMON formats are compatible back and forth. Sound files, most video files, word processing files (apart from WordPerfect), art files ... basically, with a handful of exceptions for proprietary or obscure formats, ANYTHING you can create on a PC can be read on a Mac, and vice versa.
