am running the latest version of mountain lion on my imac (which is 3 years old) and will soon be purchasing an air too. i've been using intego, but their customer service is so bad that i've given up. i want the usual malware protection, and key logging protection. do not need parent controls. any recomendations? i used kaspersky for a year, but it slowed my brand new imac to a crawl, which i've heard is also the problem with avast and avg. esent me the windows version; apparently a mac free trial doesn't exist. sophos is great, but it's just anti-virus. anyone found something good?

Rule One this is not Windows. There are no Mac OS X viruses and most senior members do not run antivirus software. If you feel you absolutely must, use ClamXAV which is freeware. The best protection is keeping your software up to date as Apple releases updates from time to time and safe browsing practices.

What you describe is so typical of commercial AV software

key logging protection - don't allow anyone else physical access to your machine

Thank you. Believe me, I'm very glad to have ditched Windoze 3 years ago. But I keep thinking there are no Mac viruses - yet. I always err on the side of extra caution.

My understanding of key logging is that one can be virtually spied upon by the unscrupulous, who record your keystrokes and steal credit card info, passwords, etc. Is this just Windoze paranoia?

To record keystrokes, a key logging software has to be physically installed on the machine.

Any software designed to recognize a key logger installed and running on your machine would do nothing to prevent someone from intercepting your passwords, etc. while using an unsecured network, say at your local McDonald's, Starbucks, etc.
