Hi,
I am new here, but I was hoping I could get some insight into what's causing my iMac to crash. I bought it with the 2 x 4gb sticks of RAM, and I have since installed 2 x 8gb Kingston sticks. I understand this could be a problem, having different sizes and brands. I wonder if it is this, or if I have dodgy RAM sticks?

The 2 8gb sticks are 1600 MHz DDR3.

Here is my OS X Problem Report:

One sure way to find out is pull the two Kingston 8 GB modules and run the iMac with just the two 4 GB modules it shipped with.

According to Mactracker and Apple, this is what your iMac can accept:

Maximum Memory 32 GB
Memory Slots 4 - 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

The panic report does indicate a memory problem, so it's a good bet that either the Kingston modules are bad (one or two) and/or they're not seated properly. I recommend pulling them and reseating them first. If it still panics, send them back and buy memory from either Crucial or OWC.

I agree.. That looks like a memory issue..

I also agree with going through Crucial or getting Crucial Mac Certified RAM form Newegg or Amazon.

Thanks for the replies.

Will give that a go. I bought the RAM brand new, but back in November, so I am unsure if I can get a refund or not.

Could it possibly be the pairing of 4's and 8's? Could that cause a problem like this?

Give Kingston a miss and stick with OWC or Crucial memory. They are Mac specialists.

No, that shouldn't cause the panics. It's either going to be a defective module or they're not seated correctly. As far as getting a refund, most memory has a lifetime warranty. As long as you didn't buy it from a seller on eBay or something like that, you should be able to get your money back.

Just a note, and not to contradict others here but my experience over the last 10 years with Macs and Kingston Ram.

I have never once in any Mac I have owned ever had a Kingston stick that was the right specs for the Mac that ever once caused a crash or anything else. All my RAM is Kingston except this last older iMac due to I got a better deal from OWC.

I normally would 100% Back OWC RAM and always will, but just stating that fact. I had issues though with Other off brands and bought a replacement Kingston stick and never one issue. Is the Kingston RAM's specs exactly what Apple says to use for that model iMac?

You could have a bad stick but that brand has never let me down here.

@Dennis:

His Kingston modules are the correct ones. Like I stated in my reply to him, it could be one bad module or they might not be seated properly. The late model iMacs have very tight memory slots and normally require a lot of "thumb pressure" to get them seated properly. I had that problem with my 2011 iMac. I actually had to get a soft cloth to use so I could push down hard enough to get the modules to seat (click in place). I haven't added memory to my 2013 27" iMac yet since it already has 8 GB installed by Apple.

I agree with you 100%. I was just posting my experiences with Macs and kingston Ram.

The 2 slots on my late 2007 Aluminum iMac are VERY tight. Had to press very hard to be sure they seated all the way like you mentioned.

Interesting information on the Kingstons. I have found of late that the iMac was crashing at lease once per day, and since removing the 2 Kingstons it hasn't crashed once.

I will try pushing the sticks in a bit harder, I might even try one for a few days, then the other.

I guess if it still crashes, I will contact the store and try some new sticks.

Thanks for the information.

Keep us posted. A Bad stick can come from anywhere. I have seen bad Crucial and OWC. More rare than most but it can happen.

I can't remember if the iMac has 2 or 4 DIMM slots. Do you have any other RAM installed on the system while the kingstons are installed? If you do, are they kingstons and also are they the same size (GB per chip wise)? Then last question also is are they the same exact voltage?

Any of these variables can cause RAM issues. The RAM may be fine, may be compatible specs, may even run fine when just new RAM is installed.. But mixed ram often does cause issues. But also do do what you mentioned and try each stick individually just incase one of the modules is faulty.. It doesn't happen often, but it does.

Cheers..

It has 4 slots, it came with the Apple 2 x 4gb sticks. I have them in the top 2 slots:

BANK 0/DIMM0 - Apple 4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
BANK 1/DIMM0 -
BANK 0/DIMM1 - Apple 4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
BANK 1/DIMM1 -

This setup is causing no issues, but I need more RAM.

BANK 0/DIMM0 - Apple 4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
BANK 1/DIMM0 - Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
BANK 0/DIMM1 - Apple 4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
BANK 1/DIMM1 - Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600 Mhz

This setup caused my issues.

Perhaps I should try a few days with only the Kingstons installed? Removing the Apple RAM might fix my problem, as you mention having the different size sticks.

Mixing the modules should NOT cause problems provided you have like modules in the same bank - which you stated they are.

Removing the two Kingston modules solved the problem. Enough said.... either one or more of the Kingston modules is bad or as I stated, they were not seated properly.

Agreed but if it were me I would try JUST the Kingstons and see if it crashes. If so take one out and try it and then the other and see if only one causes the crash. That is just me though! :D

Memory Problem?

I would make very sure that the memory modules are tightly seated. It takes two thumbs and a lot of pressure before they 'pop' into place. Only after I was satisfied that memory module seating was not a problem would I troubleshoot memory.

The iMac 27 has 4 memory slots, and can accept 4 memory modules. If you have the mac 11,3 or higher, you can run 32 GB of memory (mine has 4x8gb OWC modules and is running just fine).

In general, it is not a good idea to mix and match memory brands...try to stick with one brand, and all the same specs.

If you can get the iMac to boot, there are multiple apps to test the memory modules in the machine.

Yeah, going to try lots of combinations.

latros55 - can you point me towards a good mudule tester please?

One question before attempting different configurations, if I am down to on stick or RAM, does it matter which slot it is in?

I don't think the iMac will run with only one stick. I think you should always use two, in slots 0. This has to do with the data paths on the mother board. Additional memory should go into slots 1, again as a pair.

The iMac OS will check your memory, as well as Onyx and Tinkertool apps. If your iMac will boot, go to the Apple symbol in the upper left corner, and click on it. Select 'About This Mac' to obtain system info. There should be 4 tabs, one of which is memory, and that one will at least show you what you have in each slot. You can get more details by selecting 'System Report' and running that app.

Your best bet may be just obtaining more memory modules from OWC...Other World Computing, aka MacSales.com. Best wishes on solving this problem.
