How do I install .dmg files

Right, on my hours-old Mac, I've got several dmg files to install.

That's the good news.

The bad news is: How do I do it? Do you copy it into another folder on the computer first, or install it from a CD/USB drive?

Does one particular method have advantages over others?

I am an ABSOLUTE newbie on Mac - Bill Gates refugee. Please do NOT assume prior knowledge unless you're comparing with the various Windows platforms.

Just double click on the .dmg
An installer will open up and follow the prompts.

Which shouldn't be done... and actually cannot be done anyway. Two very different operating systems.

Switchers ?

Am I correct in thinking it is ME who is the 'Switcher' - switching meaning changing from other platforms to Mac?

If so, I thought Switchers was a piece of software because all the names are so different like those on Linux distros.

Doh!

Either way, I shall trawl through there and see what can be answered, I realise this gets tedious for those of you who are regulars, but it's been a long time since I felt completely overwhelmed by an operating system.

No it isn't. ;-) Just don't compare anything with Windows, and you'll be fine.
