Hello

I've been a PC user for years but I'm curious about Macs now and am considering a second hand G3 700mhz iBook. Would this be a good model to purchase?

Would be keeping my desktop PC for games, laptop for email, browsing, chatting etc.

I'm also wondering how easy these are to get on a wireless network?

Thanks

G3's are quite old and low-end.
You won't get good performance out of it.
If you're using your PC for games, email, browsing, chatting etc., then why are you buying a mac?
You probably will not get a strong wireless signal.

He wrote he'll be using his pc for games, and his Laptop for email, browsing, chatting, etc. I think you misread his post.

Honestly, you could get the G3. My friend's got a G3 iBook, and he uses it for pretty much the same stuff, and it seems to work just fine. I think its most limiting feature is OS X Jaguar. I find Mac OS X completely inefficient without Exposé. You could probably install Tiger on it with minimal problems, however.

Maybe I'll look at spending a bit more to get a G4...is there much of an increase in power between a G3 700mhz and a G4 800mhz?

Your Mac's Specs
15" PowerBook, 30G iPod Video, 8GB iPhone, 1GB Shuffle
12" G3 700Mhz iBook - $350 (with Wireless)
Macbook - 13" White 2.0Ghz Core Duo - $1,099

Given the original posters intent, I don't think the cost outweighs the benefits in this instance. However, I would recommend the extra cash for the G4 over the G3. You'll get a lot more miles out of it.

Prices on the MacBook start at $1099. The mid-range one is $1299, and the black one is $1499.

Thinking about this instead now

*iBook G4 12 inch - AU$850*
-G4 1.2ghz
-512mb ram
-30gb hdd
-Combodrive (DVD/CDRW)
-Airport Extreme wireless
-Apple portable power supply
-ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 32mb (AGP 4x)

I think there would be a ram upgrade (256mb) thrown in too.

Is the price ok?

Yahoo finance told me AU $850 is US $738. If that is correct, I don't think its a good deal. You can get iBook G4's on eBay for about $450-550.

unless you really want a new macbook i would suggest a G4 iBook at the very least dont think a G3 would be right.
