I purchased an iPad nearly a year ago and have had no issues with it. I'm now looking at purchasing one for somebody else and I'm wondering if there is a need to buy an extended warrenty? I remember reading a few years ago that purchasing warranties for iPods was basically useless and not recommend due to the cost of them. An iPad is a lot more money though, do people here think that purchasing a warrenty is necessary or not?

I went with the 1 year AppleCare that comes with the product and then before the 1st year was done I extended it for 2 more years..

Since AppleCare only deals with manufacturing issues and other things, most of these will show up in the first year and you can use AppleCare to get things fixed. Accidental damage is not supported, so you can decide if you want to spend the money or not..

I kind of thought the same thing. I bought an extended warrenty for mine but can't see needing it.

The warranty that Apple now offers on new iPad purchases covers accidental damage. Well worth the cost considering how easy it is to damage an iPad if you drop it. When you take into account the cost of replacing the new retina screen, I wouldn't be without it. ($99)

Ahh yes good point..I forgot that they added that recently..wasn't available when I I got my iPad..and would totally opt for that since I've dropped my iPad enough times and my daughter has dropped it a couple of times and I have a cracked screen now..
