All opinions welcome...

As mean and weird as I seem on this forum, I am very altruistic when it comes to animals. My now stepmother has a friend who has tons of cats (Over 15.) My father and stepmother were going to give me a flame point Siamese kitten for my birthday that her friend has but she didn't want to let the cat go.
However when I came over her house today I was absolutely appalled at the now cat's overall health:
It has scratched almost all of its fur off of its ears. (Probably from fleas.)
It has bite marks all over its body. (Probably from fleas.)
Its ear tips seem to have this black scabbing on it. (Maybe from fleas?)
It's very timid and clawed the ever living daylights out of me when I tried to pick it up.

She has this stray black cat that is absolutely ADORABLE. It mews all the time because it wants love. I picked it up and put it on her bed and it stayed with me for the next 3 hours as I gave it the love, attention and affection it longs to have.
He is infested with fleas.
Has bite marks all over his body.
He cried and followed me to my car when I left.

I feel guilty because I want the black cat over the Siamese. I feel (As asinine as it sounds.) as it would actually WANT my care whereas the other cat wouldn't and would fight me tooth and nail.
However I had this similar problem 6 years ago with my now ex-girlfriend and two cats. There was this Seal Point Siamese cat curled up on his cat box in the pound, seemingly on his last legs whereas this big fat lovable calico was wooing us to adopt it. We took the Siamese and he turned out to be the best cat we ever had and I miss him horribly. (she has him.)
I'm honestly torn between the two because maybe the Siamese cat COULD actually turn out lovable, but it seems content being a skittish, outdoor cat...Ugh help..haha

I would say take the Black one. I love cats and I know it's a hard decision but it sounds like the Black one PICKED YOU! My last 2 main cats picked me that same way and I could not let them go after that. They were the best and closest cats to me that I have ever had. That cat loves you.

I have had cats all my life since I was a little kid.

Me = hates dogs.

I'm deathly allergic to them, sorry.

However my $0.02 would be

Dogs < Cats < Birds.
or
Dogs< Cats < Tarantulas.

I have a Blue Fronted Amazon parrot, and for the sake of your sleep and sanity, please do not get a bird secondhand.

I know that animal adoption is the humane thing to do, but my bird was witness to a rape, and he mimics the event, with GREAT fidelity to the original event, on a daily basis. We didn't know this until we got him home.

However, the bird can also mimic the sound of my truck starting perfectly, which is the single most amazing thing I've ever heard.

In any case, do yourself a favor, and if you do decide to get a bird, don't adopt one, contrary to popular opinion.

I had a cockatoo I adopted from an abusive household. I couldn't bear to keep her any longer after a year of hearing "WAKE THE (expletive) UP YOU (expletive, expletive) BIRD."
I couldn't wean the cockatoo off of saying it. Apparently 15 years in a household like that was too much for the bird.
Sad....

Even the African Grey I have -
He was originally my mother's bird, but my stepfather is a sick sadistic.....Yeah...I'll stop there...
Sometimes I catch Bailey, my African Grey saying "Shut the (expletive) up you stupid (expletive) bird!"
He's stopped saying things like that almost all together, he does it very, very, very rarely nowadays.
While I agree with you Derek, I would say only adopt a Bird if you're ready to take on all of the bird's extra baggage that comes along with him/her.

But think of this Derek, it is very hard for a parrot to learn words, etc on only one time...So...Yeah...You know where I'm going with that...
Hopefully you can wean him off of repeating such a horrible event.

We've kinda had him since 1992. We've been trying to get him to stop, and it just doesn't want to happen.

I had to take the other cat...the Siamese....He is in such AWFUL condition. He actually has feline scabies ALL over his ears, his face, his eyes and neck. I found it its fatal if not treated so I of course took the liberties of taking care of him. It was a hefty vet bill but o well....He's really timid, but he does love being pet as he purrs...But...He is always trying to leave and hide? *Shrugs* I don't get cats...Birds are more my cup of tea. But this cat, once healthy is freakin gorgeous. He's a Flame-Point Siamese with baby blue eyes.

Sad you could not have the black cat but great you took such good care of the Siamese! He may grow out of that Timidness as he gets to know you. You have done so much for him in such a short time. I nursed this one black cat that was SCARED to death of people and within a few days it was my close friend. Give him time. He sounds like he's been treated pretty badly.

I'd love to but I can't.
The main reason why I didn't get the black one is because my stepmother didn't want him here. She said "Pedro (My big fat temperamental cat) won't do well with a full grown cat. (The black one is full grown.)"

It broke my heart too. He was sitting on the front stoop of the house when I pulled up and he ran to me when I got out of the car, mewing at me...UGH..

That would put the cat count up to 5 too...

I'm moving out in June-Maybe if he's still alive I can take him then...But that's going to be a killer deposit for an apartment:
2-3 cats and a parrot... ><

That must have broke your heart. It's obvious that black cat loves you too. Oh well, at least you have that poor mistreated Siamese to take care of!

That's just wrong on so many levels.

More than 4 legs is just creepy. :p

I have a blue point Siamese......and he's the most beautiful Cat I've ever had. He tends to want affection on his schedule however.....whereas our 3 dogs will take affection whenever it's available.

Cats = Dogs :D

get a bottle of junk to rid the cat of fleas next time you see it. and along the way get BOTH animals.

if you accumulate to many pets it limits you life in a direction... if that is bad. for example:
we have 3 dogs and 5 cats and would like to have a more clean house with better furniture and i wold like to use my passport, maybe just once. than again at this time bad economy and such lots of animals in trouble.

an outdoor cat lasts only 50% as long as something kept indoors.
