windows wont boot

MBP 2.33GHz, 120gb hdd, ATI radeon x1600
My grandfather purchased a mac pro recently and has been dual booting quite happily with win xp pro.. until today that is. He was downloading some programs in osx (leopard) and when he attempted to restart into win xp the computer just hung at the gray screen right when it boots. When i attempted to start xp from the xp disc it also hung on the gray screen.
Can someone please offer me some advice on what to try next (last ditch effort would be to just cleanly install xp again)

please any help this is his first experience with a mac and he dropped well over $5000 into it
any suggestions???

the problem is solved and appears to of had something to do with the ups he had the computer hooked up to because windows boots succesfully now.
