Is there a way to run Windows XP in clamshell mode? OS X seems to do this just fine but in Windows, I can't seem to enable the external monitor as the primary.

Can you add a little more detail to this question? I may just not be on the right mental plane for it, but I can't deduce what you are asking? When I saw the title, I thought it might be about Clam Anti Virus... Clearly it isn't, but I am not sure exactly what it is about!

I thought he meant installing XP on a Clam Shell iBook G3 when I first read the title.

What is Clamshell mode?

Clamshell mode is being able to close the monitor but still be able to use a external KB, Mouse, Monitor without it going on standby when you close the top.

And yes there is a way...

Go to Control Panel>Power Options>Advanced Tab
Then go to where it says "when i close the lid of my laptop..." and choose Do nothing from the drop down.

Hope I was right and this helped.

Oh oh and...you can make it primary/mirror the main desktop by...

Right click on desktop>choose properties>Settings Tabs>
Click Identify, Then choose the external monitor that matches the external monitors screen number in the drop down list and click "use this device as my primary monitor" but don't extend your desktop to this device if you dont want to.

Can't choose

Clam shell mode is basically running the macbook with the lid closed.

When I go into the display properties, I can select both screens (builtin and external) but I cannot select the external monitor as a primary monitor as it's greyed out.

I've worked with this type of setup many types but this is the first time I'm seeing something where the options are greyed out.

I used the latest bootcamp drivers to load on XP.

Pretty much what I said, (you can continue to use ext stuff to run the laptop while having the lid closed).

Oh you know what I'm not sure how that would work out through boot camp, thats wierd that it is greyed out I would have assumed it would work similar to it being a stand-alone win box. Let me do some research and get back to you.

Excellent, thanks for the update folks. My PowerMac G5 is my first Mac in over ten years, and I didn't even know about this mode of the MacBook. Hence my confusion. Cheers.

It's not really a mode of macbook. Most laptops are capable of it if the functionality of the os supports it. But yeah clamshell is helpful when you just want to use it at home/work on a bigger screen.

Drivers?

Maybe this is a driver issue? It is correct to say that this functionality is more Windows related than bootcamp. I've used this type of mode with my other laptop without any problems.

Again, the problem is that the checkbox to choose the external monitor is greyed out.
