Mac 8.6 -> 10.4.10 Firmware Problem

Hi !

I'd like to install Mac OS X 10.4 on my Power Mac G3 400 MHz G3, 512 MB RAM but I must update firmware (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58374) first and that's the problem !

I can't do that, because when I double-click on firmware icon, system show me the window with this text:

"The document could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found."

But there is also others problems, for example I can't instal SITt files, any self-extract archives don't works too, There is StuffIt Lite 3.5 installed in system and I can't install newer version because there is a problem with installing apps.

Please, what should I do for make Mac OS X works ?

Welcome to Mac-Forums, hl2run.

First of all, if you want 10.4.x on that Power Mac G3, you will need to add much more RAM.

It just might be easier to use the disks that came with it, wipe the hard drive and start from scratch.

Maybe I'm wrong (others will surely add some info next) but I'm not sure you can jump from OS 8.6 to OS X. I think you might need to build up from OS 9.x and then install 10.4.x. And to install 10.4.x Tiger, you will need the CD version, not the usual DVD version.

Your version of Stuffit is way to old to open newer stuffit archives. Does the G3 have internet access? If so try to find a newer Stuffit expander. Even if you reinstall your older OS you will still need stuffit to open newer sit files.

512Megs will work ok for now. My iBook G4 1.33 came with that and I just upgraded after over a year of usage to 1GB. Sure it's faster especially when loading more than one application, but it was totally useable with 512 for a while. You can upgrade that G3 400Mhz B&W to 1GB though with PC100 modules. It takes 256Meg PC100 memory .

I found a download for stuffit that will work with OS 8.6 but its' in .HQX and needs stuffit to expand!

An iBook G3 with 128MB RAM running Tiger? Ouch! You surely don't use Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop, DreamWeaver, sometimes running simultaneously...

For a pleasant computing experience, 1GB RAM or more is better.

128 Megs RAM even with Panther was painful for me. When I first got my G4 1.25 Ghz Mini, it came with 256 Megs RAM and Panther. If I opened a couple of applications and then iTunes, often if I was doing things in the other Apps iTunes would skip! I guess it was running out of RAM. Upgrading to 512 Megs later that night took care of it till I could later get 1GB for the Mini.

When I decided to get this iMac G5 in replacement of the G4 800MHz iMac (768MB RAM) running Panther 10.3.9, I was getting pretty fed up using it because it was slow for my tastes. And I didn't even mess with the apps I mentioned earlier in this thread back then.

Yes you need to install 9.2 then you can install Ten,and you must update the firmwear first. You need the latest Expander for OS 9.
