Pretty-much any distro with a PPC version will run easily on those specs. Here's the link to the page from which you can download the ISO disk image for the PPC version of Ubuntu, the most popular Linux distro at the moment & third most popular desktop OS after Windows & OS X:

    Installation/MinimalCD - Community Ubuntu Documentation

As regards formatting the partition, the installer will format it to ext3 or ext4 itself (not supported by Disk Utility); so you can just create an area of free space (or format it to "MS-DOS (FAT)" & give it a name if you want to make sure that you can identify the free partition in the Linux installer).

    Good luck
For my purposes as an engineering undergraduate; Windows is respectable (& generally necessary), Linux is admirable (& often useful), OS X is enjoyable (& requires no further justification, although plenty could be given)!

    Specs:
    Mac Mini Core i7 2012 | White 2009 MacBook 2 Ghz | 733 Mhz G4 Quicksilver
you need the 32 bit version, the G4 is not a 64bit chip, but you wouldn't need a 64 but version anyway with less than 4 gig ram
