I tried running a Mandriva live CD the other day. I couldn't get very far. Is anyone familiar with running linux on the i5 MBP? Could the i5 CPU be preventing linux from booting properly?

How far did you get? Error messages?

You could always try another distro. My experience has always been that Mandriva is terrible but that's a personal opinion.

I have tried 4 versions of mandriva, da mn Small and OpenSUSE. I dont get past the initial loading screen, before the interactive startup. I suspect it could also be improper cdrom drivers. I dont like ubuntu, but I am going to download and try it tomorrow or the weekend.

I would try running these in a virtual machine; I've had no trouble loading OpenSUSE or Ubuntu into VirtualBox, for example.

Cheers

I've got a forensics disk called Raptor that uses a modified Ubuntu distro for the live CD. haven't had any trouble loading it on my MBP, but the MBA (2011) was flaky.

Wonder if it makes a difference on the 32bit versus the 64bit version.
