Does anybody know where I get Boot Camp? And how much it costs to get the Windows OS for the Mac?

Also, if I run Windows, would I need a Windows Firewall/Anti-Virus, or what?

Thank you.

Boot camp comes with Leopard :) type it into Spotlight and you got it

You install the same exact windows you would install on any other computer, therefore it costs the same, just take you pick

boot camp is only a program to help you partition and install the system easily, specifically to set up dual boot ..... so, the windows OS will run exactly the same as anywhere else, completely independent and yes, it can get infected with every virus out there

I have a computer downstairs with Windows, do you think it comes with a Windows disk? Or do I have to buy a separate disk? If so, how much would that be?

You will have to find the disk. If not you will have to purchase a copy of Vista or download the trial of Windows 7 which will expire.

I highly recommend purchasing a physical copy of Vista as opposed to downloading it. In the event that you should decide to dump bootcamp like I did for Parallels, it will come in handy.

My PC did not come with a disk, software was built in a package. I had to purchase a copy.

Well, I would only be using Windows to boot up WarHammer, then I would be switching back to Mac OS for any other application. Would Parallels be needed at all if I do that?

you can always try the trial of parallels for 30 days to see if it works, and if it does, problem solved ... but either way, you will need a Windows XP sp2/sp3 or Vista installation disk

and btw, there rly is no way we could know if your computer downstairs came with an installation disk ;) ... just watch out for your serial, downloaded versions usually require an activation and that can be done only once! so the best way to go is if you have a retail version

don't want to get into illegal stuff here :)

edit:
I doubt you'll be able to play Warhammer 40k in Parallels though ... or do you mean some other version?? the table game you can definitely run, of course the laptop probably isn't a big enough board ;)

ok one more thing I just realized ... by disk we mean installation disk as in CD ... not a hard disk which has Windows installed on it .. just a though

hopefully I'm not confusing you so much :D

I have a Windows Vista installation disk from my other new computer. If I were to install that, would it ask me what OS I want to use when I boot up my Mac or can I switch it or something when I want to do other stuff with the Mac OS?

And I am talking about WarHammer: Age of Reckoning.

For Boot Camp you will need a single-disk, installation version of either XP SP2 or SP3, or Vista. A recovery or upgrade disk will not work, nor will an earlier version of Windows. Parallels and Fusion will let you install earlier versions.

The least expensive of the Windows disks are the "OEM System Builder Versions" of XP and Vista available online (e.g., from newegg.com). I would avoid ebay for these, based on other poster's experiences.

Cheers and good luck.

If I Were To Install Windows With Boot Camp:

If I were to install with boot camp instead of getting parallels, and downloading from a Disk, will it ask me which OS I want to use on boot up or anything? How do you go about switching OS's when you want?

It will by default, boot with OS X. To choose which operating system want to be the default, go into [Apple]>System Preferences, then go to Start-up Disk and set the OS you want to boot with. As for switching between them, on boot-up, hold down the "Option" key and you will be able to choose which operating system you wish to start.

To go to the other, restart your computer then follow the same process.

Problem Downloading Windows On My Mac

I am using the Windows Vista Re-Install Disk that came with my other new Dell computer. I am using Boot Camp to download this. Now,when I started the installation, everything was all good. When I got to the *Upgrade or Customize* part, I clicked customize *Can't click upgrade*, then it asks me to select a place to put it. It has 4 slots to put it, none of them work. I clicked on the Boot Camp, 55.GB slot, and it won't work. Either slow I click, it won't let me click Next. Anybody know what to do?

And ontop of that, I can't even get back to my Mac OS to do anything while I wait. I can't eject the disk, and every time I turn off the Mac, it goes into the Windows Installation again.

1. To boot back into OS X hold down the option key and select Macintosh HD.
2. You cant "download" anything with Boot Camp. Boot Camp is a partitioning software that helps running multiple OSes.
3. If you are doing a clean install of the Vista, you gotta click customize and then click on the BOOT CAMP partition. When I was installing Windows 7 beta earlier today, I had to click advanced---->format. Maybe you have to do that...not sure.

I clicked that Format thing, but it said everything would be deleted. Is stuff on my Hard Drive going to be deleted or stuff for Windows or what?

The re-install disc probably won't work. Those OEM discs are not designed to be used on different machines. You'll need a regular retail copy of Windows SP2 or Vista. (The Windows 7 beta burnt to DVD may also work).

Also for Vista I believe you'll need to erase the boot camp partition and format it as NTFS (which the boot camp assistent can't do AFAIK) whilst in the installer. Be sure to select the Boot camp partition that matches the size you picked, and not your main Mac OS X partition.

Well I mean, it's working after I clicked Format. But I am wondering if that will delete everything on my Hard Drive or not, so I know wether to be ****** while this is installing or not.

First rule: Backup your stuff before doing things like this.

Second: As long as you've only picked the partition and not the entire harddrive, then only the partition will be formatted and erased. Just make sure it's the right one - in most cases you can tell by the sizes (my bootcamp partition is a lot smaller).
