Cannot attach files to Mail

What could be the reason that my iMac cannot even load the smallest (200 KB) attachments to a gmail ? It starts to load and then gets stuck and won't conrtinue.

Are you using the 'Mail' application built into OSX or gmail on the website?

Gmail on the website.

Sorry for asking: I must have set up my mail account (Apple Preferences> Mail, etc.) right at the beginning but I am -obviously- not using it... I bookmarked Gmail and set it up as Start page. How does the application work? Is it better? ;-)

Have you tried different browsers? Safari, Chrome, Firefox? Same results in each?

I only use Safari

OK, but if you want to debug the issue I suggest you try in at least one other browser
