Why is it a security risk to post as "administrator"?

That's how the folks at Apple set the computer us and how I've run it since I got my iMac. It's the only account that I have set up on the computer.

Please tell me how I would reconfigure my iMac to address any problems

I use my computer as Administrator in all cases. It was more important for Windows computers with viruses and other malware that could wreak havoc if installed under an administrative account - probably less of an issue for Macs although I do know that the NSA still suggests you surf using a non-admin account. Of course, they get paid to be paranoid. If you were really concerned - you could just create a second user that doesn't have Administrative privileges and use that.

The key thing is to take care with your Admin password and under what circumstances you use it.

i agree with Brian but if you must you can create a guest account in users in system
preferences that account will have limited to no privileges.

I run from an administrator account all the time. I would suggest creating a second user account for troubleshooting purposes. When a problem affects one account but not the other that's a good indication that the problem is in the first account.
