I actually have a virus on my mac due to Safari. I don't know how it got here because I really hate Safari, unfortunately I wasn't able to download firefox before we got this virus.

I did do a scan but apparently the virus spread enough for it to take over too many files and the free scan and clean could only get rid of half. I was wondering if MacKeeper helps get rid of the virus and if it doesn't which program I could get to rid myself of this! We are willing to pay to get rid of this so please let me know. Thanks in advance.

What's happened with your machine? What did you do before all this weird behaviour started occurring? What version of OS X are you using?

The problem is MacKeeper - get rid of it. Do a search of the forums and you do not actually have a virus as there are no Mac OS X viruses. What you may have is malware known as MACDefender or MACSecurity.

Willing to bet you downloaded either Mac Protector or Mac Defender (assuming it doesn't have any more variants by now). Easy to get rid of. See here. http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os-x-operating-system/237651-suspicious-mac-protector-application.html

Don't know why I didn't do this earlier but I've moved this to a new thread. Please don't post in really old threads and don't post help messages in "The Lounge."

Can you go get my post as well - since now it looks like I responded to an age old thread...when in reality I was just a much slower typist than Harry. :) When I submitted - they were all still there - but mine seems to have been left behind.

How can it be MacKeeper, I didn't even get it yet. And if you're talking about the trial thing, I got that after the virus was even found.

And sorry about the old thread, I just posted here because when I was google searching, this is the one that came up.

Hehe - Phew! :Blushing: No worries - you pulled a long shift today. Take the rest of the night off. :)

It's not MacKeeper - click the link I posted and follow the instructions.

Safari first off is fine. Just be sure run files after download is unchecked in preferences.

You do not have a Virus as such but some Malware if anything. What they are telling you in this thread is correct.

Ok, so I actually did the process for the MacProtector that I had. How do I know if it will get rid of the virus or not? Or was that just some fake virus?

I also deleted the MacKeeper. Will this help?

It's not a virus - it's just a pain in the *** program that I guess can be categorized as malware. Assuming you deleted the downloaded packages, as well as the application from your Applications folder - then empty the trash and it's gone. Check Activity Monitor just to make sure you don't see a process associated with it.

Great!

Send us a carton of beer. Mail it to me in Australia and you can be sure I would share it with the other guys (chuckle),
