From macbook pro to imac

So i have a 13" macbook pro with 30gb of programs and file, i have an external drive connected to it that i use it for time machine... So i guess all my data is backed to that drive.. I just got a new 21" imac and i dont want to install all the programs again.. When i first turn it on it gives me an option to put my time machine backup is there anything bad about doing this?? or this is completely fine (using my time machine backup from my macbook pro into my imac during the first start of my imac???

Use migration assistant via firewire betweene the mbp and the iMac.
