I was going to update the ram in my mac book pro however, after reading the instruction manual it says that it can only have 2GB. Is it possible to upgrade to 4GB or will this break the laptop?

It's a hardware limitation - the first generation MacBook Pro (with the Core Duo CPU) is limited to 2GB total. I don't know if the machine would boot with 4GB installed, but it certainly wouldn't address it. Your best bet would be to use two 1GB matching modules so that you can extract maximum performance from your system.
