consistent kernel panics

ive been having kernel panics everytime i open my lid to wake it up from sleep. im not running parallels or azureus. its only been happening the past two days. ive only had camino, mail, and ical open.

of course i could just not sleep it, but its a tremendous inconvenience. anyone having similar problems? any ideas?

also, are kernel panics bad for the system? (by bad i mean, are there long term effects to the hardware?)

By saying lid, I can deduct you are using a notebook but nothing more. Could you give us a rundown on your system, it might help us help you.

And which version of Leopard are you using?

How much RAM?

What have you done so far on your own to troubleshoot the problem?

When did this start happening? After a software update or install?

Did you add a new peripheral to your setup?

How did you install Leopard? Which installation option did you use?

Is this a brand new Mac and you migrated some of your user data from an older Mac?

Kernel panics can potentially corrupt data if they happen too often. It did corrupt my Jaguar install on my G4 iMac. My problem was a bad RAM stick, btw.

i have a macbook core duo 2.0 ghz. with 2 gb ram, installed several months ago with no problem on tiger.

its leopard 10.5.1, and was installed via the upgrade option

no new peripherals

not a new mac

and quite frankly, im not sure how to go about troubleshooting it. however, i had visualhub and quicktime open at the same time, and i kept getting an error about some component missing (thus closing quicktime) this is when the panics started happening, atleast i think it is

i would like to try to uninstall and reinstall qt but i honestly dont know how.

The Leopard Upgrade option was sometimes successful but caused the most problems out of all possible install options. If I were you, I would back up my files and the data you want to keep like Bookmarks and Address Book stuff and do an Erase and Install instead.

You would be starting over with a fresh OS and it very well could help your Mac regain some stability.

You could try to create a new user account and see if this happens in the new account. If it does, the problem is system-wide. If it doesn't there is a conflict in your old user account.

And last thing I can think of, you could download MainMenu (correct spelling for google) from Santa Software, install it, launch it (a small + sign will appear inside a rectangle in the menubar) and use the Cleaning scripts for System Cache (Deep Clean) and User Cache (All Users), then restart.

See if that clears up the problem.

If not, an Erase and Install, IMO, is your only other option unless you are still under Apple Care and you give them a call.
