I got my macbook pro yesterday with an 80 GB hd, i've installed a couple small programs, but when I looked at my hd space it says I have only 40 GBs available! What could possibly take up 40 gigs of space?
Well due to the way the harddrive companies measure the drive and the way an OS measures a drive, 80GB = 74GB once formatted.
Apple also installs a bunch of software and drivers along with OS X which also consumes a fair amount of space. (iLife alone requires close to 10GB of space with all the sounds, loops & themes)
Do a search, there are a number of threads on how to save/reclaim some space.
