Order iMac with 16g ram vs upgrade after

Am I missing something? Apple charges $600 to upgrade to 16g of ram vs buying 12g of Crucial for about $125?
Is the factory installed recommended by anyone here for some reason? Thx!

Whatever RAM is in there is taking up two slots. If it ships with 4GB, it will have 2 x 2GB sticks. You want 16, you need to buy 16.
