When I run my macbook for 30 min up to 3 hours I hear the fan run. Its a bit loud noise too, however my notebook is not very hot. Is this a normal function? I always keep my macbook on a hard surface or when in bed on a larger hardcover book to promote circulations.

A lot depends on what you're doing with the MacBook. If you're playing games which require a lot of hard drive access and video movement, the machine is going to get warm. The fan is thermally controlled by heat sensors. As the CPU does more work it will heat up causing the fan to increase RPM. That's normal.

Download and install the free Dashboard widget "iStatPro" so you can monitor temperatures and fan speed.
