I have a Macbook Pro that won't start up. When I turn it on, it goes to the loading screen (the apple icon with the loading wheel) and then turns off. It's not the battery and I know it's not the 'stuck in sleep mode' problem. I've tried running a disk check (fsck -y) but it just fails. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?

Does it say it can't be repaired or it just doesn't finish?

Also, try reseting the SMC.

What error does it give?

First, try repairing the HDD from the install disk and Disk Utility.

If that doesn't fix it, I would try an Erase and Install. Could also try Disk Warrior, if all else fails.

Check the SMART status of your HDD, also.
