Running MB Pro on Secondary Display - Question

I currently have an external monitor hooked up to my macbook pro via the DVI output. My question is, is there any way to "close" the laptop lid and have everything run on the external display, such as the dock moving over and all applications that are running? I did it before, but it was by accident and now I don't know how to do it again.
