MacBook battery problem

Hi
I have a macbook 13 intel and the battery although recognised wont work.The computer works with the power adapter but it doesnt work on battery
I tried resetting the SMC but nothing
The system also doesnt charge the battery
I am using the latest macos with all the updates installed
Any comments?
Please help

Your battery may be defective. How old is the machine? Is it still under warranty?
