I want to load an iMove project into Final Cut Express. When I select the Share button and choose "Export Final Cut XML . . . it saves the project as a "text" file, rendering it completely usless. Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Under the File menu, under the Import entry, do you see "XML..."? I have the feature in Final Cut Pro.

Take note of the notes in the lower pane of the iMovie XML export window.

The .XML file is not a text file in the conventional sense; it is eXtended Markup Language. So once you have the XML saved, go into Final Cut Express, and Import XML from iMovie. You should then see your source audio and video files, and be able to edit, etc., from there.

Cheers!

I can import an FCE XML for iMovie, but as I import it, it tells me that the file is indeed a text file, it states "Text Document", and treats it as such;

screeny

It shows up in the FCE browser window, but it won't do anything.

I've spent the entire day trying to figure out how to import an iMove project into Final Cut Express. Am I the only one out here having this problem.

Thanks

I do but as you can see, it thinks it's a text file. BAD!

Are you saying the Choose button is not bright blue? Click on my window capture.

Also notice FCP says it is a text file. That is because it is. FC understands what that file says and uses that information read in your video from the iMovie project.

Yes, it appears exactly as you show, but when I import it into FCE, nothing happens. That's what is puzzling me.

Well, I can't think of any reason for that. I'd use the Console app to see if any errors are being reported.

Also to note, I don't recall the import being immediate. It can take a little time.

Final Cut Express Text File

Michael,

I am having the same problem with a file I exported from imovie for Final Cut Express.
Final Cut Express will not import it as a text file.

Were you able to solve that problem, if so what is the solution.

No still living with it. I now do a log and transfer in FCE, but that's a bit iffy.

Thanks, but Quicktime Pro lets you convert videos too. You can do File/Export/and choose teh format...But still even then I would not know what format would be the best for low memory and fine quality. SO kinda unresolved I guess..

I am new to FCP (and actually surfing for help at the moment) - but if the file is .mov, you can simply drag it into a bin in FCP. It is that easy. I have been dragging and dropping iMovie files with no problem that I can see.
