bootable usb

Install or remove windows 7 or later version is grayed out in boot camp for me and I can only find guides on how to make a bootable usb drive using boot camp. Since I can't use boot camp can someone please guide me on how to get windows 8 on a usb with the iso and make it bootable on my macbook pro early 2011. Also Im on osx mavericks 10.9.2

Microsoft do not allow installing Windows on an external drive. Part of their anti-piracy measures. Do you not have Windows on a DVD? Your model MBP has a superdrive.

Why don't you burn the Windows 8 iso to a DVD and use that to install from the Boot Camp assistant? Is your optical drive not working?
