I was thinking to upgrade from tiger to snow leopard soon but I just wan't to make sure about one thing. I have an external HD and its also bootable (tiger), now if I upgrade to snow leopard will that data still be accessible? Should I just erase the whole external HD and rebackup with snow leopard?

Yes the data will still be accessible, same as it is now.

No, don't backup SL to your external until you're confident everything is ok on your internal. I tend to keep my previous OS backup for a week or two before I'll back up the new OS to it. You may end up deciding to go back to your previous OS and wait for the 10.6.1 update. In the meantime, you can move any new documents you create over to it so you're still keeping a back up of your important data.
