My school Macbook won't start!

My macbook that i got in june started shutting down the finder continuously so i shut down the mac and now it won't go past the apple on the first screen. quick help would be appreciative as i got homework on it!:Oops:

white MB 2.16GHz 3GB 320GB 10.6.1
do you see anything besides the Apple? A rainbow twirly or the spinning clock thing or a (hopefully not) flashing folder?
And the screen is...gray?
Do you have Tiger or Leopard?
