Ipod-touch. firmware

can someone please enlighten me about the various ipod touch versions?
Is there any difference in the first place?

I'm planning to get the 16gb
And it's stated it's the 1st gen MA627zp
I heard it's the older version, so I'm a bit confused...
Even though i get the oldest version, can i still update to the latest one?..

Between all of the versions, the main difference is capacity. While we're not exactly at second gen touch, the newer ones come with the Mail, Google Maps, Stocks, and Weather apps whereas with the older ones you have to pay an additional $20 to get them.

and those applications can only be installed through iTunes if I'm not wrong. ..right..
and does the SDk affect the current model or the new upcoming models?..
