I just bought a 500 gb hdd for my macbook. I am going to be using bootcamp to switch between windows and apple OS, this is a new hdd, no formatting on it. Do I format it all as a mac, or only the part I want to be used by OSX?

Format the new hard drive as Mac HFS Extended Journaled and use the GUID partition scheme. When it comes time to install Windows, the Boot Camp assistant will do the proper setup/creation for the Windows partition and use the Windows installer to apply the format needed. XP can run on either FAT-32 or NTFS while Vista and Windows 7 run on NTFS only.
