iMac G5 Display Problem

I've had my 20" iMac G5 for about a month now. It's been working great until last night when I started having a display problem. The upper half of the screen dims by about 30-40%. The bottom half stays fine.

I have to shutdown, wait a few minutes, and restart to get the screen back to normal. It happens every few hours. I'm wondering if this is an overheating problem due to the design.

Anyone else experience this yet? I'm hoping warranty service on this doesn't take too long.

No, that is not an overheating issue. It is an issue with the inverter. Call up Apple and explain to them what is happing. They will run you through a few checks and such. They will advise you to take it to an Apple Store/Certified Repair Center to get the inverter swapped out. You can however opt for the "self instal" but they will make you sign off on an electronic agreement stating that if you mess up..its not apples fault and its your problem not theirs. The reason they make you do this is because the inverter is DEEP within the system..you will practically have to dismantle the whole machine just to get to it.

Your not the only one!

Hey just thought I'd mention that I also have the 20" model and have had the same problem. I phoned Apple support and their advise was to reset the PRAM and then when that didn't work to reset the PMU. That didn't work either! Also I don't need to restart to rectify the problem, I just put the machine to sleep then wake it up, but it's a pain in the backside!

I also hab this problem with my iMac 20'
I called Apple and asked for a new iMac (I also had a "shutdown" problem when working). The new one is fine ... but ...

when I have un dark picture on screen (or a full screen black picture) I can see some brighter spots (like a backlight) around the screen.

Display problem fixed?

Hey,

after being advised to reset PRAM and PMU, I was then advised to do an archive and install of OS X. I was a bit doubtful to say the least, but it's been nearly 2 weeks without the problem, so I think it might be fixed?

I got my iMac one week ago, and haven't had this problem. Do you think its just waiting to happen or Apple pulled their heads out of their *** and remedied it with the newer ones? Thanks for your time.

iMaC G5 DISPLAY PROBLEM

I have a similar problem along with a mouse problem. MY IMAC G5 20" IS ABOUT 10 days old. At start-up and at wakeup from sleep mode the screen has in the upper half, a horizontal pattern of white and black dashes, same size as a printed hyphen, the dashes are horizontal as well. After a couple hours with 2 Apple technicians I was told that I have a video display anomaly. The next tech reviewing the case # file asked me another time to describe the problem which I did and told her the previous tech had described it as a "video display anomaly". Duh!! This young lady(girl) in Texas told me she did not understand foreign terms and would have to refer me to a product specialist. That next person wanted me to remove the back cover and follow his walk-through in performing some series of changes in hardware connections deep inside. Told him thanks but no thanks and now they want me to do an erase and reinstall. We'll see. I feel like I'm getting royally jerked and Apple is reluctant to admit they don't know what the **** is going on and replace the entire unit. How many hours of interrogation by 10th graders is required by Apple?

I would guess that you have it set to ask for a password when it wakes from sleep / screensaver .
Do you have to enter your password when booting up ?

If you go into System Preferences onto Accounts you can reset it there to avoid any of those situations arising .

Hope this helps
