login as root

to gain access as root i type "login root" and a password prompt is given which i cant seem to qualify. i am aware of only one password i used to install the osx?

where can i verify i have the correct passwords?

i aspire root because no love from sudo

recently i had osx 10.4.11 crash completely w/o my input, i know i can do better than that as root. now have 10.5.2 / macbook pro

i am curious where vmware is putting their virtual machine files and if a dead virtual machine is completely removed. reference posting on the vmware forum (may need a login):
