My dvd drive gave in at some point. It didn't come up on any form and wasn't even in system profiler. So I thought it might be a driver problem so I reistalled mac os x via an external dvd drive. This was all well and done but now it refuses my password. I know for a fact that it is the right password because I use it all the time and on top of it I used it to re-install. What can I do?

I think another clean install will need to be done, so that you start afresh.
One thing though, do check you didn't accidently have Caps lock on when you set the password up, by typing your password with it on and then off, just to make sure.
