Signs of router going "bad?"

I am having to "reset" my home Linksys router every third day or so in order to re-establish my wifi connection. I do not believe it is an isolated computer issue, as my MacBook Pro, our 2 iMacs and my wife's HP work laptop all cannot connect.

1. Should a router go "bad" after approximately 2 years of use?
2. Is there some way to test the router?
3. Is it possible it is an issue with the modem provided by my internet provider?

Thanks for you help; it is about to drive me crazy!

I have this happen about once/week with my router...not really sure why.

But with it being on 24-7-365...I could see it being due to age. If mine was doing this every 3 days (and i knew it was the router)...I would probably replace it.

Thanks Nick, I was kinda leaning towards just replacing the darn thing.

I haven't researched routers lately; is there anything new technology wise to look for?

There is should and there is reality. Should a GOOD router die in 2 years (not being hit by lightning or a massive power surge BTW)? No.

But the truth is things happen. Not all Macs last for 10 years but many do and longer.

If you want to know if it's the modem you would have to hard wire one system to the modem and run it and see if you have the same issue. Is this DSL or Cable? A DSL or Cable modem has nothing to do with the routers WiFi Dropping, but if the internet goes away right to the modem, then it's the modem.

Is WiFi Signal dropping out or just the internet stops working?

My opinion right now is your router has issues. Answer that one question and then we can probably be sure.

Also besides the one question about WiFi dropping out, what Model is your Linksys?

My iConnect 625W router did die within the two years and went precisely the way you have described soccerphysio. Fortunately my ISP determined that model came with a fault because of the failure rate, advised the manufacturer who replaced it FOC.

The WiFi signal drops out on multiple computers, which in turn causes our internet connection to stop.

The Linksys model is WRT54G.

If it's happening on many computers, it must be the router.
