Yesterday I backed up my computer on an external drive...then deleted extra stuff I THOUGHT! This morning, I cannot open the external drive nor any shortcuts on my desktop, nor any new downloads. I checked the website for restoration information, downloaded it, but can't open it. No disk or external flashdrives will open. I am able to use the icons at the bottom of my screen and access the internet. Does anyone have any ideas?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Helps if you provide your operating system, but if Lion or Mountain Lion go into Lion Recovery and you may be able to format the drive and download a new version from the App Store.

If OS X,.6 or earlier use your install DVD, boot from that, and if necessary erase the hard drive and do a clean install. From you description you have deleted something important such as your Home file.
