I ask this on behalf of a friend..

He recently purchased a Macbook. He has hardly ever ran the thing off battery, however the battery no longer holds it's charge. Is there any quick ways to check whether the battery is completely dead? Would apple be happy to exchange the battery free of charge?

If your friends macbook is "recently" purchased as you said. Then he should exchange anything that he is not happy with.

A battery not holding a charge is definately a defect and Apple are obliged to replace it, no questions asked. This is provding your version of recently is the same as mine lol.

Oh, try the battery in another macbook if you can. You'll save yourself a great deal of time if you recieve anotehr battery only to discover the same problem. That would then point to an internal issue with your macbook itself rather than the battery.

Ben.
