• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I'm using iMovie 08 with an HD camcorder. There is an option in the size settings to deinterlace. The video I make with a lot of motion seems fine to me without deinterlacing checked.

What are the pro's/con's to checking this box?

I'm assuming you are talking about exporting.

When exporting, you create interlaced content for television sets and I believe DVDs too since the MPEG2 files are probably interlaced. If your destination is a computer then deinterlace. You'll find the picture tends to look better on a computer screen when you deinterlace.

I've also recently read somewhere that deinterlacing can generate smaller files. I haven't tested that though.

If you don't know then leave it...

check the box if you shot the video on a progressive camera or on film, otherwise if you don't know what you are doing you'll ruin the video and have to reexport it and waste time.
