Your Mac's Specs
cMBP 13" mid-2012, 2.9 ghz i7, 8gb ram, 256 gb SSD,
I am trying to partition 50GB of my Macintosh HD for use with Linux. All I did was open Disk Utility, choose my HD, click partition on the tab on the right, click the plus sign, resize it to 50 GB and then click apply. It appears to work fine but when it actually partitions it (when it is finished with the process) the partion is not 50GB it's 1/2 of my HDD space. I don't know if there is something I am doing wrong... I'm really confused by this and it will not allow me to resize it back down to 50GB. I have to delete the partition which merges the 2 partitions back into one and then I can re-do the part. but it still only ever gives me 1/2 of my HD space. Total SSD space is 256GB and it makes the original Macintosh HD 121GB even and the new partition 129.01 GB. ARGH! If I hit the Burn button will it actually partition it to those dimensions or will it do what I originally asked of it?! Please, if anybody can help me, please step forward.

Thank you.

OSXX thank you for the link but I seem to be doing everything correctly according to that link... I tried it again (and did the same steps in that link, which were the steps I was doing on my own) and the same result occured. I have screenshots but since there is no difference I don't have a need to post them.

In the screenshots on that website link it showed the person naming the new partition Ubuntu and you can tell in one of the last screenshots that the partition was actually the Mac OS Journaled (extended) format. So they are doing the same thing I am doing and it's not working for me. I haven't used 121.5GB on my drive so I don't know why it insists that that has to be the size of my drive and the other portion being the new partition when I chose the new partition to only be 50GB which leaves plenty of room for my Mac OS installation and files I will install or utilize down the road.

Would partitioning it first as free space, then changing it to Mac OS X Journaled (extended) work? I will try that. I just verified disk permissions, fixed permissions (one library file had incorrect permissions), then verified disk, that was fine. Now I am erasing free space. Not sure if all that will help but it's doing it right now. *sigh* I may have to buy or find a good free partitoner for Mac. This is my first time trying to put linux on a mac as this is my first mac (got it I think in August last year). I like to keep up on linux distros, mainly Linux Mint as I love that distro and used it a lot between roughly 2006-2012. I'll keep looking for info since it apparently is not as simple as that geek.com link makes you think. I have plenty of experience partitioning PC hdd's but joining the Mac world I guess changes things up some. Disk Utility says about 7 minutes remain for erasing the free space... I do have all apps closed other than firefox.

ETA: Um ok so now my startup disk is almost full. I just got a warning from Disk Utility as it is "creating a second temporary file" nearing completion of the erasing of the free space. I've never done this before so I don't know if this is normal... It still reads that there is 111GB available on the disk just below the status bar of the file operation... Is that normal?

ETA2: Ok well the operation completed and now my available space is 178.15GB. Ok well that's good. I'll re-do the partitioning again, this time using free space as the format. *sigh*

I rebooted after again verifying the disk which was fine. It took about twice as long to boot as it used to. Now when I open disk utility I see:

Screen Shot 2013-07-14 at 1.23.52 AM.png

The sizing is STILL WRONG! I give up with Disk Utility. I will be searching for a partitioner other than this utility. Something must be wrong with it. ARGH!:Shouting::Shouting::Shouting:

I am having a similar problem, except instead of making the partition half of my hard drive, it makes it just over 76 GB. Also, the box on the right that I should be able to type in a new size is always un-clickable, unless I am formatting the drive as well as creating new partitions.

Try dragging the top of the blue box down to resize the partition. What you did is halve your drive into 2 partitions. If you can resize the bottom one, you might need to format whats left as HFS+ to re-add it back to your boot partition.
