My imac has recently been displaying an alert when I switch it on saying that the time must be set to 2001 or beyond to enable my software to work correctly. When I go to the Date & Time display it is set to 1970! What is the reason for this?? i change it to the correct time & date every time but it won't remember it.

Yeah, my old imac does that. The small internal battery that powers the memory temporarily, when the mac is switched off, has died. You need to find out what type of battery it is and how to open up the iMac to get access to it so it you can change it.
